No dia 5 de novembro, pelas 14h00, o Departamento de Física do ISEL promove no Auditório A o seminário "Chirality Across Scales: Helicoidal Cellulose Structures from Nature to Adaptive Materials".
O evento terá como orador Maria Helena Godinho (i3N/CENIMAT - Centro de Investigação de Materiais | Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa).
Abstract:
Cellulose is a chiral polymer that forms hierarchical helicoidal structures across multiple length scales, giving rise to structural colouration, mechanical reinforcement, and stimulus-responsive motion
The handedness of these structures can vary from molecular to macroscopic levels: climbing plant tendrils display alternating left- and right-handed twists, Erodium seed awns transform into right-handed helices in response to moisture, and both chiralities contribute to the iridescence of Pollia condensata fruits at the nanoscale [1-4].
Inspired by these natural systems, this work investigates the controlled creation of curled micro/nano polymeric fibres and films.
The formation of helical shapes from initially linear polymer filaments is achieved through the intentional induction of axial asymmetry [5]. Moreover, helicoidal cellulose derived structures that demonstrate adaptive movements in response to environmental stimuli are investigated [6].
Insights gained from these naturally occurring architectures provide a foundation for developing advanced helical biopolymeric materials with distinctive optical and mechanical properties.
