New technologies - immersive sound, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence - are changing the way people experience and interact with sound. The use of different approaches to classic measuring equipment and the development of new techniques and disruptive concepts make Acoustics, Vibrations and Audio areas undergoing great evolution.
All of this dynamic means that professionals with technical and scientific training will be needed to face the new challenges and opportunities. The New Approaches in Applied Acoustics and Audio, PG-N4A, postgraduate course addresses this necessity, exploring all the functionalities of equipment and analysis platforms and introducing the new paradigms that future professionals will face.
Considering market needs, this course addresses the most important topics in the fields of Acoustics, Vibrations and Audio/Sound - Architectural and environmental acoustics, Installation/tuning of sound reinforcement systems, Immersive sound for perception of the real sound field, Virtual and Augmented reality in music, Artificial Intelligence in fault diagnosis, Vibration control in industry - and its main objectives are:
- Increase professional skills by updating knowledge in the area of sound;
- Increase the quality and competitiveness of companies and services;
- Diversify the training offer in the area of sound and related areas.
Classes
- The course lasts for 37 weeks over 2 semesters, with a total of 360 contact hours.
- Classes take place after work hours, on Thursdays and Fridays (between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm) and on occasional Wednesdays (at UC Seminar I and II).
- Theoretical-practical classes will preferably be taught in person at ISEL's facilities, with possible transmission via video conference. Therefore, it will not be mandatory for students to go to ISEL more than once a week.
- For each topic covered, the theoretical foundation is presented and a varied set of practical cases studied, in both classroom and lab environments. Additionally, field work ensures the study of in-situ real situations of different sound environments.
- As the course has a strong practical component, we will have a variety of work tools at our disposal. Practical classes will be taught in the Audio and Acoustics Laboratory and in the ISEL Immersive Sound Room, equipped with a multichannel sound system with 40 speakers.
