The unit aims to provide students with knowledge concerning waste (urban, hospital, agricultural and industrial) and the physical, chemical and biological techniques of waste treatment/valorisation and final disposal, as well as the associated costs and environmental impacts.
The theoretical and practical concepts of design, operation and maintenance of treatment/valorisation plants and waste disposal are presented.
After attending the CU, students should be able to: know how to substantiate and understand design, operation and maintenance studies of waste treatment/valorisation and disposal, be able to define the set of processes most appropriate for the treatment of a specific waste, in scope of waste management and valorisation operations, establish the operating conditions within which the processes should occur, minimizing operating costs and environmental impacts and recovering materials and/or energy, knowing, understanding and applying the legislation.
