The students that are approved in this curricular unit should be able to:

1. Identify the functional framework corresponding to Euler-Lagrange equations;
2. Recognize the variational formalism for classical problems from the calculus of variations;
3. Understand the fundamental concepts and results on weak topologies;
4. Recognize Sobolev spaces and their properties;
5. Apply the direct method in the calculus of variations.
